Alpha Dogg - MODEL # 3756 - Firmware update version 1.3

Compressed ZIP file includes instructions and update files to update the Primos item 3756 - Alpha Dogg to version 1.3 firmware.

Note that if your remote unit displays a SN of the speaker unit it is trying to connect to when you turn on the remote, then both speaker and remote units are already updated to version 1.3.

See the following article for details on update changes: Alpha Dogg and Turbo Dogg firmware update list

EDIT (03/21/12): The update instructions have been revised to clarify the speaker unit update process (STEP 3 and STEP 4).

EDIT: (12/18/13) - Make sure to install fresh batteries into both the speaker unit and remote BEFORE performing the update process as the update for the remote firmware can take several hours to complete and the unit could become inoperable if the batteries run out during the update process.

EDIT (01/04/14): Update file has been taken down due to reported issues with updating newer remotes.  Note that this is an older firmware than has been shipping on products for over a year and updating is NOT needed on newer products.  If you have an older product, contact Customer Service to discuss updating options.

    Troy,

The 2 new files you need are in the 3756_Alpha_Dogg_V1_3.ZIP file attached to this article.  They are PS000003.UPD (updates the speaker unit to 1.3) and PRA00003.UPD (updates the remote to 1.3).  You will ONLY have older files on the speaker unit storage if you have previously updated the unit and it will likely only be one file ( PRA00002.UPD ) as the speaker unit did not have an update file for v1.2.

Leaving the update files on the unit is ok as long as there is only ONE version present (you can also remove them without a problem after the update has succeeded).  A problem can arise if 2 different versions of UPD files are present as the unit will upgrade and downgrade itself everytime the unit is powered up (or the remote connects to the speaker unit).  That is why it is important to make sure an older version of the UPD file is NOT present when adding a new update files.  Again, your unit may not have these older files if it has never been updated or they were removed after the update.

I hope this was helpful as I know this aspect of the update process can be confusing.

The instructions state that the red led light will flash for 3 to 5 seconds after copying the upd file and powering the unit off and back on.  Mine has been flashing for 35 minutes and shows no sign of progress.  This is beginning to frustrate me.

If it will not stop flashing, then it is hosed.  I did the same thing last week.  You have to exchange it for a different one..

@ David Pjesky` - I see that you have a ticket set up for the defective unit and we can handle the exchange there.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

I ended up going back to Cabelas to exchange it.  thanks.

While updating to 1.3 the remote did not tun off as stated. Got message to power cycle the speaker and wait 30 sec. I powered the speaker off and back on. The screen then indicated that it was synchronizing phase 1 of 3 as it shows in directions. Since I was expected the remote to turn off at the end of initalizing as indicated in the directions, I was concerned if the update is correct.   Thanks, Mark

    Mark,

I have not run across the remote not powering down after the update, but from what occured afterward, the update was successful.  You can verify the firmware version on the remote from the SETTINGS > INFO screen.

I completed the update yesterday.  The remote did not turn off for me either, but everything seemed to go ok.  The directions say that it should take 10 minutes to update and sync, but it took my unit well over an hour for each.

I think my original problem with the update locking up the speaker unit may have been caused by the .zip files.  I copied the two new files directly from the zip folder to the speaker unit the first time.  The second try, I copied the zip files to the desktop and then to the caller.

Clark, I checked info after completion and it did show version as 1.3. Just wanted to make sure the load was completed correctly. It appears to be working fine. Just for info this was on the alpha. There was a time lapse on me checking the remote. Maybe the remote turned back on after a time to instruct the speaker to be powered down to complete process. Anyway, it appears to be working fine and thanks for the response. Now I got to set it up in the back yard again and call my neighbor back in with her binoculars. She still has know clue, but it is a hoot to watch her search.  It appears she responds best to bird sounds.    Later

Any possibility that a battery power indicator will be added to software? Would be a nice.

    Stephen,

Step 5 clearly states that the remote update will take 1-2 hours, so I'm not sure where you got the 10 minuts from.  Step 6 mentions 10 minutes, but is referencing the time for the remote to sync with the Speaker unit (this is typical whenever the remote needs to re-sync and has no direct connection to any update).

I hope that clarifies those issues.

@ Mark - A battery meter of some sort is certainly a planned feature, but I really don't have any time frame on that being available (it is certainly on the TO DO list).

When I first took these untis home and did some testing in my backyard, a gang local animal lovers showed up to stop the animal cruelty.....  Luckily I explained it all (and assured them I would not be my normal testing location) before they called the Law.   I thought it was funny, but they didn't get the joke....

I added the new update files (mine didn't have any to replace). I turned back on the unit and the light never flashed, just stayed solid. I turned on the remote and it has said "Finding Speaker..." for about an hour now. Is it updating or can it not find the speaker? I attempted to contact Customer Service, however, they just keep referring me back to this site.

If the speaker unit did not flash, then it may have already been at 1.3 (the LED will only flash if it finds a different firmware version than is already installed).  Turn both units off and then turn on the remote and then the speaker unit.   If you still have issues, open a ticket and I'll get you some assistance.

I finally got the remote to load the updated information, however the remote has been sitting since 4:00pm (next to the caller) saying "Initialization: Synchronizing Phase 1 of 3." How long does this take to go through the phases? It is now 7:10pm.

    Jeff,

The update process is very data transmit intensive (also remote synchronization) and any interferenence in the 900MHz band can cause these processes to slow down.  I see that you have a ticket open and will assit you thru that, but just a suggestion to everyone else (and I know this sounds crazy), try placing the updating or syncronizing unit (and remote) in your truck / car (lock it up, of course) and see if that does not speed up the process.  The inside of the vehicle should provde some small level of shielding against outside interference.

Normal time for the Alpha Dogg to update to 1.3 is about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Also, during the process the remote displpays a '.' (period) moving across the screen as data is received if you are not seeing dots being across the screen periodically, then the process may need to be restarted.  Note that the period advances below the line already displayed above it (making the vertical lines  "thicker"), so it may be difficult to identfy the next period appearing.  I am requesting that the update activity meter be altered to be more obvious that activity is still happening.

my computer wont alow me nor will it pick up my alpha dogg wat do i need to do to fix this

@ kaleb moore - Please plug the cable into and out of the Alpha Dogg speaker unit mutliple times as the rubber seal over the port often causes connection issues (we are looking into an alternate solution for future designs).  The port is a standard USB 1.1 port and should work with any USB capable computer.

Try plugging the cable into another port on your computer as well and also turning the speaker unit off / on after the cable is connected.  It is very unlikely that the USB port on the Alpha Dogg is bad as files are transfered thru that port during the manufacturing process.  It can potentially be a cable issue and it is possible that the port on the speaker unit itself  is defective, in which case you will need to contact Customer Service directly to arrange for a replacement.

I installed the software to the speaker with no problems, then tried and tried and tried to install to my remote with no luck, could not find the speaker.   Reread the instructions several times and then these comments.  I was in a basement so no extraneous radiation from any devices, still no connection.  Then I realized that I had flourescent lights, shut them off, and the remote started the connection almost immediately.  Just passing this along.

That is an interesting point as improperly grounded floresescent lighting COULD generate noise in that band.  You may want to check the grounding of your basement light ballast units.

I did the update and it only took like 20 minutes to sync, should i be worried it didn't update correctly?

If the remote shows 1.3 in the Settings > Info menu screen then the remote update was successful and you don't need to worry about it.

So, I guess I'm screwed if the light will not stop flashing after copying files over to the Alpha Dogg?

Returned my caller and got a new one, but I am afraid to try to update to Firmware 1.3 again.

  • Avatar

Jerry - First, make sure that the caller is not already 1.3.  If when you turn on the remote if the remote shows a SN for the speaker unit it is searching for, then the unit is already 1.3 and you don't need to do anything.

However, if you need to update, just make sure that you do NOT turn off the speaker unit while it is updating.  It is all too easy to accidentally do and I will attempt to clarify the process so you understand what's going on during the process

EDIT: I have revised the instructions process to take out the step of turning off the speaker unit and hopefully this will eliminate the possibility of it being turned off at the wrong time (edited the end of STEP 3 and STEP 4 to take out the speaker power cycle during this process).  Note that I have edited the instructions below to follow with the new process.

After you copy the files to the speaker unit, Simply unplug the USB cable from the speaker unit and the LED should begin to flash for 5 seconds and then turn solid.  Turn off the speaker unit and proceed with STEP 5 of the instructions to update the remote.

This issue arises if someone removes the USB cable and then turns off the unit while it is updating (an easy mistake to make and probably made worse by the previous instructions).

I hope this helps you get your unit updated successfully (if it needs it).

EDIT: After reviewing the instructions (r02) I have realized that this issue would be less likely to happen if the speaker unit were NOT powered down during the process, so I have updated the instructions (r03) and have added them to this article and updated the ZIP file to include the new version (r03).

where in the instructions do you get the update i only have a zip which i downloaded and a pdf that tells you how to plug the speaker to the computer and thats it. I have no clue on how to download the updated software and install into alpha dogg please help

  • Avatar
    Clark Manuel

@ MICHAEL EPIFANIA - The PDF at the top of this page is pretty specific on how to perform the update.  The ZIP file contains the update files and the instructions state this as well.  I'm not sure exactly what additional help we can provide, but if you open a support ticket we can see about getting someone to contact you and help you with the update.

Does the firmware 1.3 give the capability to monitor battery levels of the speaker and remote of the alpha dogg?
